In the Spotlight 🔦

Open Source Radio is built on the energy and dedication of the people who bring our programs to life. With In The Spotlight, we’re shining a light on the artists, selectors, and behind-the-scenes contributors who make OSR what it is.

In each edition, we’ll introduce new residents stepping into the booth and celebrate those who have been shaping our sound for a while now. Get to know their residency stories, their music, and the passion that fuels our community.

First up: Dancing In The Key Of Life w/ Guus Christian

“Dancing In The Key Of Life is my resident show on Open Source Radio. Since covid times when the station was founded, I’ve been fortunate to have a two hour slot. Its frequency has been irregular at times, but I always enjoy being in the green container. Every show starts with a spoken word piece taken from a lecture by writer Alan Watts. He tries to relativize our Western attitude where life is a series of milestones you need to accomplish (be it education, work, family, or relationships). It ends with the line: ‘But we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music was being played.’
This starting point gives me the freedom to dig deep and (re)discover (dance) music, to make connections between songs from different origins, or to push new releases.
Sometimes calm, with ambient, spiritual jazz, soul or balearic. Sometimes energetic with disco, house and more forms of electronic music.
Sometimes I focus on a specific artist or country in a special episode. For example about famous DJs like Ron Hardy or David Mancuso.
Sometimes, I invite a guest DJ to join me. I’ve been lucky to have friends from Nijmegen (Stan Reijnen), Netherlands (Wes) or Berlin (Moe) come visit the show so far.
Having a physical spot to share music matters to me, it’s equally important to the online aspect of having an archive with shows.
Every time, I meet volunteers who keep the station running, or meet familiar faces in the surrounding area (be it Hubert of Vasim).”

“Huge shouts to everyone who puts in the time and effort to make the station what it is today. From founding fathers Mauke and Sander to Helpdesk Vincent, Fabian, Streamnerd and everyone I forget to mention (sorry! You still rock!).
In addition to my own show, I’m involved with the Blauwdruk Radio shows, where we host guests who DJ on our club nights. From Fred P to Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, it’s a joy and an honour to welcome international DJs to our local station. I’ve also had the pleasure of interviewing some personal heroes, like San Soda and Red D about New Beat, or host longtime inspiration KC The Funkaholic for a six hour marathon. I would not be complete without mentioning the awesome stage hostings OSR has done where I’ve had the pleasure of playing, on Drift Festival and Down The Rabbit Hole.
I’m forever grateful to be a part of this vital spot in Nijmegen’s music- and nightlife. Long Live Open Source Radio!”
