In the Spotlight is our ongoing series highlighting the people who shape Open Source Radio, on-air and behind the scenes. Residents, hosts, and creators tell their own stories in their own words. This time, we’re shining the light on Lysah – longtime resident, deep digger, and a familiar face both in and beyond the container.
“Open Source Radio holds a special place in my heart. Before COVID, I was already exploring music and DJing. I co-founded the student association SoundLab with a couple of friends. One year later, OSR started and opened up space for new talent. I got the chance to play a few sets (definitely out of my comfort zone!) with my very first one being alongside my friend Locus Error. It was nerve-wracking because I was very insecure about my skills, but at the same time, it was really exciting.
Through those experiences, I discovered how much I truly enjoy playing music. I also started collecting vinyl around the same time, with Marini Records as my main supplier. OSR turned out to be the perfect platform for experimenting and practising with my records.
Now, 14 shows in, I’ve really found my rhythm. In my sets, I play whatever I’m into at the time; sometimes more up-tempo, other times more introspective and listening-focused. Sometimes I dive into one style or theme per set, like cosmic disco or deep house. Every show also features some newly discovered tracks or reflects the vibe of a specific gig I have coming up that week. One example that stands out is a Friday when I played an afternoon set at Open Source Radio, followed by a late-night gig at Tutti at De Plak. The afternoon show turned into the perfect warm-up; I got to play a sneak preview of what I had in mind for the party later that night, but kept it more down-tempo and laid-back for the radio. It was a really fun way to ease into the night and play music for two different settings. OSR has been such a valuable space to practice and grow, especially when it comes to storytelling through music.
I’ve also met so many fellow DJs and promoters through the platform of OSR, and I’ve made some great memories playing OSR-hosted events at Drift, Kunstnacht, and Hubert. I’m very grateful for this, and I’m looking forward to what’s still coming!”
